Gobustan – Mud Volcanoes

There are about 800 mud volcanoes in the world and 350 of them are located in Azerbaijan. Moreover, some of these volcanoes are quite large and dangerous — eruptions are accompanied by gas condensate explosions and sometimes even significant ignitions (up to 1 km high), because they are usually located directly above oil and gas fields. Approximately 200 major eruptions have occurred from 50 volcanoes on the territory of the Republic of Azerbaijan since 1810 to the present.

The most famous and visited mud volcanoes are located near the city Gobustan.

NASA geologists who have studied the nature of Mars have concluded that the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are similar in structure to the elevations of the red planet. On September 15, 2004, the largest mud volcano in the world, located on the territory of Azerbaijan, entered the Guinness Book of Records.
