“Fairy Tale” Canyon is a small gorge on the southern shore of Issyk—Kul, famous for its red clay rocks. The canyon is located about 120 kilometers from Balykchi, near the village of Tosor. “Fairy Tale” is a very visited place among tourists. The reason for this is the easy accessibility of the canyon and its stunning landscapes and contrasts. The erosion of the soil, lasting thousands of years, has done its job: a variety of bizarre figures of stone and clay rise in the canyon. The canyon “Fairy Tale” is composed of multicolored clays, minerals and rocks, which adds picturesqueness to this place.
Some of the natural sculptures in the canyon have their own names. The most recognizable is the “Chinese Wall”, very reminiscent of the famous architectural monument of China. It is worth adding that in winter there is almost no snow, and therefore you can see the Fairy Tale in all its glory at any time of the year. The canyon is located very close to the road and the shore of the lake, and therefore it is a great option for a vacation or picnic location.
Semenov Gorge (also Chon-Ak-Suu) is one of the most famous mountain gorges on the northern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul. It is located on the Kyungei-Ala-Too ridge and has a length of 30 kilometers. In the depths of the gorge there is a small lake, which is called Sacred, because of its purity and transparency. Also in the upper part of the gorge it connects with the Grigoriev gorge.
The gorge got its name in honor of the famous traveler Semenov-Tyan-Shansky, who explored these places in the middle of the XIX century. This place is very popular among tourists: there are not so many easily accessible and at the same time beautiful gorges on the northern shore of Issyk-Kul. Already in the lower part of the gorge, a dense spruce forest begins. In addition to fir trees, thickets of barberry, sea buckthorn, rosehip and currant can be found in the gorge.
The gorge has a fairly developed tourist infrastructure. Here you can spend the night in a yurt, taste Kyrgyz national dishes cooked on a campfire, drink kymyz and get to know the nomadic culture of the country better. From the end of July to the end of September, there is a yurt town where you can try to install a yurt or just enjoy nomadic life in the middle of untouched nature.
A large number of tourist routes pass through the Semenovsky Gorge. Most of them are intended for one-day hikes, but there are also difficult routes leading to the Chon-Keminsky gorge or to the Zailiysky Alatau ridge.
